How to Troubleshoot Zigbee
Learn what to do if you are having problems with Zigbee devices on your Hubitat Elevation hub, including inability to pair new devices or control existing devices
How to Troubleshoot Zigbee
Is Zigbee on your Hubitat Elevation hub not working as expected? Here are the steps to take to resolve your problem.
Verify Network Health
Zigbee is a mesh network and works best with multiple "routers" (or "repeaters") on the network to extend range and ensure every device has a reliable path (or several) to the hub. Additionally, routers are required if you have more than 32 Zigbee "end devices" (devices that are not routers) added to your hub. If you have lots of devices but no routers or devices far away from the hub are unable to pair, we suggest adding repeaters or either relocating your hub to a more central location or the device closer to the hub.

Radio Troubles?
If you have general Zigbee problems despite having a solid mesh network, you may be experiencing one of several specific Zigbee problems that can be resolved with one of the solutions below. Such problems include:
- inability to pair (add) new Zigbee devices
- inability to control most or all previously paired Zigbee devices
- Zigbee radio state stuck at "INITIALIZING" on the Settings > Zigbee Details page.
To resolve these problems, try one of the following. We suggest trying these steps in order. You may stop when you have resolved your problem:
-
Reboot your Zigbee radio from Settings > Zigbee Details.
-
If that does not help, reboot your hub from Settings > Reboot and see if the problem is resolved. If not, continue with the next step.
-
If that does not help, rebuild your Zigbee network from Settings > Zigbee Details .
-
If that does not help, try a different Zigbee channel from Settings > Zigbee Details .
-
If that does not help, navigate to Settings > Zigbee Details , sort the device table (at the bottom of the page) by the Msgs (messages count) column, and look for any devices with a significantly higher number of messages than most of your other devices. If any stand out, steps you can take include:
- reset and re-pair the affected device (do not remove it from your hub first; your automations will not be affected if you don't — note that this advice is applicable to Zigbee only)
- if the device is "chatty" (e.g., power or energy monitors, etc.), see if the device can be configured in such a way that it reports less frequently
- consider whether the device or device firmware may be defective or worthy of replacement or upgrading (if your network behaves better when the device is powered down, this may be the case)
-
If you have any Zigbee smart bulbs paired directly to your hub, re-read the tips above.
-
If your radio is stuck in "INITIALIZING" status on the Settings > Zigbee Details page, use the Diagnostic Tool to reset the Zigbee radio by using the options under Advanced.... (If any Zigbee devices were previously paired, you will need to re-pair them after this step.)
- If the radio continues to show "Status: INITIALIZING" after all of the above, open a warranty/support case at https://support.hubitat.com.
